Oscar-winning short ‘Young Love’ now a Max animated series

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:57:25 GMT

Nearly dialogue-free, the Oscar-winning, six-minute 2019 animated short “Hair Love” from Matthew A. Cherry was inspired by videos on social media of Black fathers caring for their children’s hair. With the new series “Young Love,” Cherry has expanded that premise to focus on the close-knit family at the story’s center with a 12-episode animated comedy for Max.Mom is Angela (Issa Rae) and she’s a hair stylist who is picking her life back up after an illness. Dad is Stephen, a struggling music producer (Scott Mescudi, aka the rapper Kid Cudi) who has been holding down the fort in the meantime. They live on the West Side of Chicago and share a multifamily home with their 6-year-old daughter Zuri (Brooke Conaway), a spirited kid who isn’t afraid to assert herself, or her preferences. They’re upstairs. Downstairs are the grandparents (Loretta Devine and Harry Lennix). The show zeros in on the kinds of small details that make up a life. Schoen: How old is too old for our elected officials?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:57:25 GMT

With the 2024 elections rapidly approaching, Americans are being forced to reckon with an important, albeit uncomfortable question: How old is too old for our elected officials? This is by no means the first time age has played a role in politics – Ronald Reagan was asked whether at age 73 he was too old to be reelected in 1984 – although rarely have politicians’ ages been front and center the way they are now. Both frontrunners for each party’s presidential nomination – President Joe Biden (80 years old) and former President Donald Trump (77 years old) – would be the oldest president in our nation’s history – a record Biden already holds, while Trump would occupy both the 3rd and 1st spots on that list should he win next November. The issue extends to Congress as well. Rep. Nancy Pelosi recently announced that at age 83, she is seeking another term in the House. And Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who is 81 years of age, has now had two separate, very public, health scares in...

Enabling dependence, or just taking care of kids?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:57:25 GMT

Q. We pay child support and all med/dental bills, even though my husband’s ex is supposed to pay half. She says she can’t afford it. So she and my husband made a deal that she will just pay co-pays when she takes the kids to the doctor or dentist. I know she has a job. But, we are getting notifications that co-pays are not being paid, and now they are coming after us. I don’t believe she can’t afford co-pays! Isn’t there a limit to enabling her dependency on my husband? Plus, when we ask for a little extra time with the kids, she makes it very difficult. She needs to do her part. Am I wrong? What’s good ex-etiquette?A. Technically, of course not. But if she doesn’t have it, she doesn’t have it. The job you described may pay only a portion of what is needed. My first question would be, has dad talked to her about this particular aspect of non-payment? If the answer is yes and she still can’t afford even co-pays, it may be time to put your animosity aside for the kid’s sake.If yo...
