Elections in Serbia

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:49:00 GMT

The Serbian government has been accused of a series of misdoings during yesterday’s elections: from buying in thousands of voters from Republika Srpska and other neighbouring states (Montenegro, Macedonia, Kosovo) who have fake residency in Belgrade to an attack on CRTA observer mission (poll observers) where their vehicle has been completely destroyed and they have been threatened when indicating on infractions, the situation is hectic regarding the elections procedure.Other accusations, such as the so-called “Bulgarian train” method where votes are bought on the spot with the voter receiving outside the polling station a filled out ballot with the governing party already circled or when impoverished minority groups (like Roma) who are in worse socio-economic living conditions are asked to take a picture of their ballot and ID card - they are then assured they will continue to get social assistance or receive bonuses, are two of other irregularities being seen. The opposition and ci...

A foe turned friend

On the face of it, he is a perfect opposition politician - all righteous anger and condemnation when you browse through his social networks or listen to him speaking in front of a rally with his supporters.Igor Dodon, an ex-President of Moldova and one of the country’s most prominent politicians, does not mince words when it comes to bashing the incumbent Maia Sandu or her ruling PAS party whom he accuses of having turned Moldova into a dictatorship. Switching fluently between Russian and Romanian, he tours Moldova calling on his supporters to “send a clear message to the authorities that they are no longer legitimate.” His anti-Western stance has even earned him a reputation as the most pro-Russian politician in Moldova who once came to power by capitalizing on a photograph with Russia’s Vladimir Putin and was Putin’s only foreign guest of honour at a military parade in Moscow in 2017.Mr. Dodon lost to Sandu in a 2020 run-off and has been at the helm of the largest opposition Socia...

Div. 3-5 boys basketball preview: Plenty of contenders for Div. 3 crown

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:49:00 GMT

Archbishop Williams moving to Div. 2 after winning the Div. 3 state title last year leaves a void that many are looking to fill.A good place to start is perennial contender St. Mary’s (Lynn). J.J. Martinez and Jake Fortier comprise one of the better backcourts around, while 6-foot-5 Donel Mutombo provides an interior presence. Down the road a bit from St. Mary’s, Lynn Classical might be ready to make some noise as the solid backcourt of Marvin Avery Jr. and Almina Gerado are back.A team capable of making some serious noise is Hugh Coleman’s Charlestown squad. A semifinalist in Div. 2 last year, the Townies have to be considered one of the favorites as Jaylen Hunter-Coleman and Jaylin Williams-Crawford return along with forward Trevari Andrews.Old Rochester will lean on players such as forwards Robert Spenard, John Butler and Chase Besancon. All-South Coast Conference center Nathan Levesque is back for Apponequet along with guard Will Levreault.Standout forward Bria...
